Help Jones Get The Medical Treatment He Needs to Avoid Meningitis, Brain infections, Stroke, and Permanent Disability

You all know and love Jones, but you may not know that he is currently facing a severe medical crisis. We need your help so that he can receive treatment from the experienced doctors at Duke University in North Carolina who specialize in the type of treatment he needs for the best chance of a life free from life-threatening meningitis, brain infections, stroke, and permanent disability.

At Duke, Jones will have a specifically tailored treatment plan for his condition. The Duke specialists currently have Jones’ medical files and diagnostic test results in hand, and all that needs to happen now is that we get Jones there as soon as possible.

How did this happen?

Jones was hospitalized in May 2019 with advanced Lyme disease and underwent multiple spinal punctures during the process of receiving his diagnosis here in New Orleans at Ochsner Hospital. These delicate procedures were botched, and immediately after his fourth spinal tap Jones began to suffer severe symptoms of a spinal cerebral fluid leak (CSF). A spinal cerebrospinal fluid leak is a debilitating medical condition in which a small tear or hole forms in the outer membrane containing the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. This tear leads to leakage of the fluid that cushions the brain and spinal cord. As a result of this leakage, Jones is suffering from excruciating headaches and is bedridden. Few physicians have experience in sealing CSF leaks. This is the case with the physicians in New Orleans that have treated Jones thus far, who have failed in their three attempts to treat him with blood patches. This lack of experience oftentimes means that patients are told to lie in bed indefinitely. Jones has delayed his second year of college because of his condition and faces dangerous illness and longterm disability without the expert treatment that the specialized CSF team at Duke University Hospital is known for.

Why Duke?

Duke University is one of only three centers in the country that has been working continuously on the effective treatment of spinal cerebrospinal fluid leaks. Patients travel to Duke from across the country and from Canada, Europe, the Far East, Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. The CSF team at Duke has conducted groundbreaking research that has an advanced understanding of the disease and revolutionized the way CSF leaks are treated. Specifically, they have developed new treatments to seal leaks using minimally-invasive procedures.

What’s the alternative if Jones can’t get to North Carolina for treatment? He faces invasive spinal surgery by New Orleans surgeons who have never performed this procedure before, and further medical interventions by the very same medical personnel that botched Jones’ spinal punctures and caused his CFS leak in the first place.

How will your donation help?

Your donation will help Omie get Jones to Duke as soon as possible so that he can get out of pain and resume his life. This includes a rented vehicle in which Jones can lay down — it’s possible that Jones may need to go to Duke several times, and that the costs will become overwhelming. It is also possible that Jones’ current healthcare insurance through Medicare will not cover the cost of ongoing treatment. In addition, Omie needs to keep her business, The Tiger Bakery, open so she can continue to support the family while she takes Jones to and from North Carolina as many times as it takes to get him well. She needs help to keep the doors open and the oven baking so that her new business does not go under.
