Help Mom Save Her Home!
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Alyx Banyan, daughter of Barbara Casale Lonsdale. Some of you know me and the story, struggle, journey and healing of my family. Many of you don’t. I’m reaching out now because I am at a point in this journey where I need to ask for help. My 89 year old mother is at risk of losing her home due to unpaid property taxes. This is her home since 1959. A place where the neighbors look out for her, the kids she babysat 30 years ago still come to visit and her favorite postal carrier makes sure her cat doesn’t run off when he hand delivers her mail. She wants to stay home and tend to her plants, garden, and two cats, Chloe and Puma. This is truly small town living and it would be devastating for her to leave.
How did we get here? After my Dad died my Mom was doing fine. The income from her rental units (here home is a side by side duplex) and her SSI allows for modest living. Then, due to mismanagement and some very unfortunate events, her savings became depleted and her property taxes went unpaid.
I am now managing her finances so this can never happen again. With myself as the new manager of her finances, my brother Robert helping manage the property and the support of my cousin Michael, we are Team Mommala! and are determined to save her home.
The details:
I crunched the numbers. It was at this point I learned the reality: She has significant debt and is two years behind in property taxes. The tax debt alone is $19,000, with the interest fees accumulating monthly, which is terrifying. We’ve been chipping away at the tax bill but are $4,000 short to make the minimum payment. Her home is slated for the dreaded tax sale list in December.
How can you help?
With great humility, I am asking my community and the larger community to help Team Mommala raise money. I would be profoundly grateful for any assistance, whether you choose to share this with your friends and family, or are able to donate funds. Any amount will make a difference and is truly appreciated.
With much gratitude, Alyx
