"Tough times never last, but tough people do."

On Saturday, March 9, 2019, my sister, Kelly, found a 3 cm mass on her breast after getting out of the shower. Immediately, Kelly took action and scheduled an appointment for the doctor that week to get it examined.  On March 15, 2019, after many tests, Kelly received the heart-wrenching news that she has a diagnosis of Triple Negative Breast Cancer. In just 6 days, everything changed for Kelly and our family. This news was very shocking to our whole family, as my sister is only 24 years old.  A few months prior to receiving this news, my mom took a gene test to determine if she was a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation, which runs on her side of the family. She received the results two weeks prior to Kelly's diagnosis.  The gene test confirmed she was indeed a carrier of the gene.  Women who inherit the BRCA1 gene mutation run a much greater risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer.  Kelly later took the same gene test, confirming that she also inherited the BRCA1 gene mutation.  The oncologist informed us that the cancer was very fast-growing and action needed to be taken immediately.

Currently, Kelly just finished up her 8th and final chemo treatment this past week. She is progressing exactly to the schedule her oncologist laid out for her, and the tumor has shrunk immensely, since first being diagnosed.  After a month break from chemo, her next steps will be surgery, followed by radiation. This process is much more of a marathon than a sprint. She continues to rise and conquer each day, one day at a time. Kelly is a huge inspiration not only to myself, but to everyone around her as well.

Despite going through this difficult time, Kelly thinks about helping others instead of herself.  After her diagnosis, she was given a list of day-to-day items needed for the side effects of her chemo treatments. Kelly came up with the idea of creating gift baskets to help alleviate some of the stress that follows with a diagnosis of breast cancer. These baskets will include the following items: Biotene mouthwash, Biotene toothpaste, hand sanitizer, soft toothbrush, Chapstick, baseball cap, peppermint candy, water bottle, Aveeno unscented lotion, puzzle book, journal, and a pen.  The basket will also include a note with words of encouragement as a reminder that they are never fighting alone. Each basket will cost around $35.  If you are able, we are asking for money donations in order to purchase items to create these gift baskets.  The gift baskets will be given to the breast center at Lutheran General Hospital (Park Ridge, IL), where Kelly’s story began.  Any and all donations are greatly appreciated!
