Hello! Hola! Bonjour!
Have you ever had the thought of traveling abroad, or even traveling to study and enhance your knowledge of the world? Well I have! My name is Itzel Santos, I’m a sophomore at Metropolitan State University of Denver, a first generation college student, and the oldest of 5. I am double majoring in Spanish and Criminal Justice and a goal I have set for myself is to study abroad before I graduate college.
I have been presented with the opportunity to travel to Spain this summer to perfect my Spanish and experience the culture of another country that will expand my world view. Being a young person of color in society has many challenges. I am currently working 2 jobs and attending college full time and help my parents with my younger siblings. I make enough money to pay my tuition, and to help my parents out as much as I can. My parents work hard to provide for all of us but sending me to Spain is financially challenging for our family. It would be very disappointing if I had to watch this opportunity pass me by because my family can’t afford it. I come from a hard working family, those values were instilled in me at a young age so I am committed to working hard to take advantage of this once in a life time opportunity.
I am launching this fundraiser in hopes that my community can support my dream of studying in Spain. The money raised will be used to cover airfare fee and institution fees at the University of Cadiz. I will be taking 9 credit hours and will receive a certificate of completion from the University of Cadiz. I will also be traveling to Granada and Cevilla-Cordoba to expand my cultural knowledge.
The trip is scheduled for June 26th-August 6th 2016. Payments are due every month of about $2,200 each month. Outside of the GoFund Me fundraising, I am also applying to several scholarships. My counselor has shared that because there is a limited amount of scholarships to offer the process is extremely competitive and there are triple the amount of applicants than scholarships, so she encouraged me to do what I can to raise as much of the money as possible on my own.
If I am able to attend this trip it will be a life changing experience for me. I will learn and see things that I don't have access to everyday. With your support, I believe anything is possible and every goal can be accomplished. If you are not able to support me financially, I would appreciate it if you could support me by sending this to your friends, family and professional networks. EVERY single dollar helps; no donation is too small or too big. I also believe in paying it forward so to honor the support that I get from you all, upon my return from Spain I will be volunteering with children in the community to support their academic growth with tutoring, reading books to them and being a good role model.
Thank you in advance for any support you can give me!
