It is with the heaviest heart that I have created this GoFundMe page for my mom Patricia. 2020 has been a challenging year for most, and in her case Thanksgiving day was the most difficult for her and for all of us closest to her. It was the day she received the most unthinkable news. She and I had planned to cook the Turkey and enjoy the holiday simply and quietly at home relaxing due to taking covid precautions. Everything turned upside down that morning when her right side went completely weak. I rushed her to the hospital and within hours she was told that she had a mass on the right side of her brain with extensive swelling and needed to be moved to another hospital to undergo brain surgery.
She had the craniotomy (brain surgery) on December 2, 2020 at Saint Barnabas Medical in Livingston, NJ and the main tumor was successfully removed. We were relieved at the success of the surgery but soon after were informed that the tumor was due to her having advanced renal cell carcinoma (Stage IV kidney cancer). The cancer in the kidney had spread to both lungs and also to the brain, causing the swelling and loss of movement to her one side. A great team of oncologists were immediately put in place to help her through the fight of her life. In the weeks that followed her recovery, she fought off 2 infections and was in and out of the hospital due to minor complications but the plan for her therapy was in motion and was set to begin at the beginning of January 2021.
To compound all of this devastating news, she received some more bad news regarding her beloved cat Coco. He fell ill mid January and was diagnosed with kidney failure. After failed attempts to nurse him back to health, she had no choice but to put him down.
After my mom had further testing and scans over these weeks in January, it was then detected that she had some type of mass on her uterus which would also have to be biopsied and possibly removed. More shocking news came on January 29, 2021 when the doctors told her that this mass was in fact uterine cancer and completely unrelated to the kidney cancer. Another major surgery (hysterectomy) is now needed to prevent the spread of this cancer. This will now delay her immunotherapy treatments further as she will have to fully recover from this procedure first.
If you know my mom, you know what an incredible and selfless person she is. She has the kindest most loving heart and would do anything for not only her family and friends, but for a complete stranger just the same. She has proven to be stronger than she knows and has been grasping onto her faith through it all. She is keeping an unbelievably positive attitude through everything and all of us around her are doing our absolute best to match her spirits. She has blown us away with how well she’s handled everything thus far but still has a very long road ahead of her.
In addition to the crushing and overwhelming diagnosis and continuous unexpected news over the past 2 months comes the enormous expense that comes with extended hospital stays, surgeries and ongoing cancer treatments. The financial stress caused by my mom’s unforeseen medical emergency has been quite daunting for her as she is no longer able to drive or work. Although insurance is helpful, there are many expenses that will not be covered. My goal for having this GoFundMe page is for my mom to have help with the burden of the financial impact she’s facing and will continue to face going forward and to also ask for your prayers during this difficult time as we navigate through this journey alongside her.
