Two days ago, I took in a 10-month-old puppy named Makai. I assume that he was hit by a car and then left alone by his owner. When I found him, he was badly injured and unable to walk.
He still can’t use one of his legs at all and therefore needs immediate medical treatment.
Despite still being a puppy, life has already been cruel to him. Not only is he suffering from the accident, he is also severely underweight and clearly shows signs of long-term neglect and starvation. His body is very fragile, and I am working hard to slowly help him gain weight again and rebuild his strength. He has likely not had proper nutrition for a long time, and his recovery will take patience, consistent care, and medical support.
Even now, you can see how much he wants to just be a normal, happy puppy. He watches the other dogs play, trying to follow along but his body won’t let him. He can’t jump onto the couch to cuddle with them, and instead he often ends up sleeping on the floor, even though all he wants is to be close, to feel safe, and to be part of the pack.
With proper medical care, treatment, rehabilitation, and nutrition, I truly believe Makai can recover and go on to live a full life without these limitations.
On Hawaii’s Big Island, the reality is devastating: an estimated 7 out of 10 dogs picked up from the streets are euthanized. I try to intervene before they reach that point, giving them safety, time, and a chance to heal. I believe every dog deserves a chance.
Right now, I am caring for 22 dogs. Many have special medical needs, including cancer or seizures. Some are so deeply traumatized that they probably will never be ready for adoption. Our sanctuary is a no-kill sanctuary, meaning that once they come here, they stay here for life or until they get adopted.
That commitment comes with significant ongoing costs for medical care, food, shelter, and daily needs.
I took Makai in despite already being at full capacity and without the financial means to handle another emergency case. But turning him away was not an option.
This is why I am asking for help.
Your donations will go directly toward:
• Makai’s urgent medical treatment, nutrition, and rehabilitation
• Food and daily care for all 22 dogs
• Medical needs, bedding, and essential supplies for the sanctuary
Please consider supporting his recovery and becoming part of his story. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference.
Makai survived being abandoned. Now he needs help to truly live.
