Hi, I’m Tim Smart, and I’m proud to share that I’m graduating with my Master’s Degree in History. This achievement means the world to me, especially because I’ve faced some really tough challenges along the way.
I live with a rare neurological condition called Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM), which left me paraplegic in March, 2016, just before I turned 18 years old. Living with ADEM presents significant physical and emotional challenges. This rare neurological condition causes sudden inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, often leading to symptoms like nerve pain, spasms, and extreme fatigue. Daily life requires tremendous resilience—navigating medical treatments, adapting to new physical limitations, and overcoming obstacles that many people never face.
Despite everything, I never gave up on my dream to pursue higher education and a career in history. I worked hard—even during the hardest days—to keep moving forward. Now, I’m excited to begin the next step: pursuing my PhD in History, with the goal of becoming a professor and author, inspiring others through teaching and research.
However, I need a little help. My current wheelchair-accessible van is a 1993 Plymouth Voyager that continues to break down. It’s become unreliable and makes it hard for me to get to classes, appointments, and important events. I’m raising funds to buy a safe, dependable, wheelchair-accessible van that will give me the freedom and independence I need to continue my journey.
As a thank-you for your support, I’m offering some special gifts, including:
Digital access to at least two of my historical essays
- Radicalism in the French Revolution of 1789
- The Medical Enlightenment
Acknowledgment in my future PhD dissertation
And more surprises along the way!
Even better, my family will match every donation, doubling the impact of your generosity.
Thank you for believing in me and helping me take this next big step. Your support means everything.
With gratitude,
Timothy Smart
