Help Us Save Historic Promont

We Need Your Help to Save Historic Promont

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards” Soren Kierkegaard

The nonprofit Greater Milford Area Historical Society (GMAHS) has been collecting, preserving, interpreting, and promoting the history of Milford and Miami Township, OH for 52 years. This mission has served and assisted our community to thrive into the 21st century by promoting local preservation and sharing our local history throughout the community.

Historic Promont (circa 1865) is the headquarters and house museum of GMAHS. Thirty-nine years ago, the house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in honor of its most famous resident, 43rd Ohio Governor John M. Pattison, the only Ohio Governor from Clermont County. Thirty-six years ago, the house was bequeathed to GMAHS in trust that GMAHS would be good stewards of the historic site, and over a 15 year period GMAHS members and sponsors labored to restore the house to its glory days of the Governor’s residence there from 1879-1906.

Today, we find our hallmark historical landmark, Promont, in dire need of some capital repairs. The 152 year old Victorian Italianate style home has suffered the battering of over 100 years of unpredictable Ohio weather, and, alarmingly, we have discovered that the balconettes on our tower have become waterlogged and can no longer withstand the weight of themselves as the wood is breaking down. In addition, we actively have water leaking into a 3rd floor room at the roof line, traveling down the plaster wall resulting in troubling damage to the ceiling, moldings, and wall of the 2nd floor master bedroom, as well as a third floor servant’s quarter.

Will You Help Us Save the Integrity of Milford’s 1865 House Museum and Historical Society Headquarters?

Thus far, GMAHS has been able to restore and/or maintain these features - the balconettes, the moldings, the plasterwork - that are original to the 1865 construction, but now we find we need to reach out for your support.

Being one of the last Victorian Italianate style homes in the Milford/Miami Township area, and certainly the last one open to the public, we feel an urgency and responsibility to keep it open so the public can not only continue to share in the history of the home itself, but also continue to have access to the many items and records on display or stored at Promont, which document the history and development of the Milford and Miami Township areas.

Considering the custom and specialty work involved in preserving the unique craftsmanship that went into building the Promont structure, which was a technological marvel of its time, the costs involved extend beyond our current nonprofit capital fund coffers.

Please consider helping us keep history alive and accessible to the citizens of Milford, Miami Township, Clermont County and beyond. No donation is too small, as every dollar counts in this matter! We will gratefully acknowledge every donor at any level.

Please thoughtfully consider what local history means to you, your family, and our community; as well as whether you are able to help us fulfill this mission of repair and preservation for our community.

With our heartfelt gratitude, Thank You!
