In May, Hillary was diagnosed with non-invasive Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), Stage 0 breast cancer. While we are incredibly thankful it was caught very early, the medical bills have already started coming in quickly. Even with insurance, many of the costs are significant. For full transparency, Hillary has already met with three oncologists—surgical, medical, and radiation—and each initial visit averaged around $400. Genetic testing is standard for patients under 40, and that bill alone is over $700 after insurance. Following her biopsy, Hillary also required an ER visit due to bleeding after hours, which resulted in an additional $500 bill. The surgery estimate to remove the cancer is $1500+. As you can see, the expenses are adding up very quickly. We are incredibly thankful that we have never had to ask for financial help before, and we know payment plans exist, but we created this fundraiser to help ease the burden of the many cancer-related expenses ahead.

At this time, we still do not have estimates any possible follow-up treatments such as radiation. We chose this fundraising amount as a starting point to help cover immediate medical bills, gas for the many appointments already happening and continuing through at least September, and other related expenses. Eventually, we will meet our deductible, after which coinsurance costs will be more manageable.

Following surgery, Hillary will be out of work for a minimum of two weeks. If radiation is needed, her availability to work will remain limited, as treatments would take place Monday through Friday in Raleigh. The combination of lost income and mounting medical bills is a burden so many families unexpectedly face.
