It’s approaching four years since I last enrolled in a class. In my first two post graduate years, I taught in Detroit. My teaching experience was life changing. Every day I had the opportunity to make a difference in the life of 120 students by teaching the truth about the United States. Still, I became frustrated with the school system. The school was underfunded and the students were overdisciplined. I felt I could be more impactful in a different role. So, I spent an entire year applying to graduate programs as a way out of the classroom only to be rejected from 3 of the 4 programs I applied to.
These rejections meant I had to find another path. I came home with no job or real idea of what to do next. After a long application process I was offered a job in Jackson, MS at the Southern Poverty Law Center as a Community Advocate. I met amazing people and organizers in Jackson. With them I learned the intersection of advocacy, organizing and the law. This inspired me to become a lawyer. I started studying for the LSAT right away. I studied for six months and took the LSAT twice. In December, I was accepted to my dream school on a full academic scholarship, Howard University School of Law. This process taught me real perseverance and patience.
Attending Howard University School of Law is the opportunity of a lifetime, but I could use some help moving to DC., I’m asking for donations to assist with the costs, any amount helps! Even if you cannot donate, sharing this post is appreciated!
