Hilfe für Igelbabies - help for hedgehog babies

Paradiesisch könnte so ein Leben als Igel sein: ein paar Insekten verputzen, durch die Hecken rollen und den ganzen Winter einfach verschlafen. Leider ist die Realität für viele Stachelhelden eine andere: Verstümmelungen durch Rasenrobotor, Angriffe von Hunden, schwindende Lebensräume und gefährliche Strassen... überall lauern neue Gefahren.

Meine Bekannte Mabel (ein Verein ist in Gründung) kümmert sich schon seit 9 Jahren um Igel in Not, aber dieses Jahr ist es besonders schlimm: 70 Igel sind in Mabel's Obhut (8 mal so viele wie in vorherigen Jahren!) und 39 junge Igel sind immer noch zu krank und/oder haben nicht das nötige Gewicht, um in den Winterschlaf zu gehen. Sie haben seit ihrer Geburt einfach nicht mehr genug Futter gefunden (das Insektensterben ist in vollem Gange!).

Mabel pflegt nun diese Igelbabies so aufopferungsvoll, dass einem die Tränen kommen. Sie schlafen mit ihr in ihrem Wohnzimmer, damit sie immer ein Auge auf sie haben kann. Sie kommt aus der Pflege und hat von einer Mentorin in einer Igelstation im Norden gelernt, wie man sie gegen Krankheiten impft, kleine Wunden verarztet und sich um sie kümmert. Die Tierheime und Tierärzte haben keine Kapazitäten für die nötige Rundumpflege, und so landen sie bei Mabel, die nicht nein sagen kann zu jedem neuen Schützling.

Aber es fehlt natürlich an allem. Zum einen an allem was Geld kostet (Unterlagen, Medizin, Futter, Streu, gelgentlich Tierarztkosten), aber auch an helfenden Händen und Platz.

Jetzt versuche ich ihr wenigstens mit einer Spendenkampagne die gröbsten finanziellen Sorgen um ihre Schützlinge zu nehmen.Der Betrag ist ungefähr das was in einem Monat an Kosten für 40 Igel anfällt, bis sie dann hoffentlich im Winterschlaf sind und im Frühjahr ausgewildert werden können. (Sollte Geld übrig bleiben, kommt es natürlich den neuen Schützlingen im Sommer/Winter 2025 zu Gute!)

Ich weiß natürlich wie knapp das Geld überall ist, vor Weihnachten ganz besonders, aber vielleicht geht doch ein gekaufter Kaffee weniger oder der Pullover wird doch nicht ersetzt und tut es noch ein weiteres Jahr. Es würde vielleicht einem kleinen Heckenschweinchen das Leben retten.

Life as a hedgehog could be heavenly: eating a few insects, rolling through the hedges and sleeping through the winter. Unfortunately, the reality for many spiny heroes is quite different: Mutilations by lawn robots, attacks by dogs, dwindling habitats and dangerous roads.... New dangers lurk everywhere.

My friend Mabel (she is in the process of setting up an association) has been looking after hedgehogs in need for over 9 years, but this year it's particularly bad: 70 hedgehogs are under Mabel's care this year (8 times the amount of previous years!) and 39 young hedgies are still too sick and/or haven't gained enough weight to go into hibernation. They simply haven't found enough food since they were born (biodiversity loss is in full swing!).

Mabel now cares for these baby hedgehogs so devotedly that it brings tears to your eyes. They sleep with her in her living room so she can always keep an eye on them. She comes from a care profession and has learned from a mentor at a hedgehog sanctuary in the north how to vaccinate them against diseases, dress small wounds and look after them. The animal shelters and vets don't have the capacity to provide the necessary all-round care, so they end up with Mabel, who can't say no to any new protégé.

But of course there is a lack of everything. On the one hand, everything that costs money (coverings for the cages, medicine, food, winter nesting materials, sometimes vet fees), but also helping hands.

Now I'm trying to relieve her of at least the biggest financial worries about her protégés with a fundraising campaign; the amount is roughly what 40 hedgehogs cost in a month until they are hopefully in hibernation and can be released into the wild in the spring. (should money be left over, it will of course go towards the new arrivals in summer/winter of 2025!)

Of course we know how tight money is everywhere, especially before Christmas, but maybe one less coffee bought or making the sweater last another year rather than replacing it. Maybe it would save the life of a little hedgehog.
