Help Hilario Rebuild After Being Wrongfully Detained & Deported by ICE
Hilario Lopez is a member of the Portland community — a hardworking landscaper, small business owner, and legal permanent resident who spent years building an honest life in the U.S. while working toward citizenship.
A few weeks ago, everything was taken from him in a matter of hours.
While Hilario and his brother were out doing landscaping work — the work they’ve done for years for countless Portland families and local businesses — ICE agents detained them without cause. Despite their documented legal status, they were denied due process and answers, and transferred to a detention center. Within 3 days, they were forcibly deported to Mexico.
Hilario has lived and worked in the U.S. for years and was on the final steps toward becoming a U.S. citizen. Now, he’s been dropped in a country he hasn’t lived in for years, forced to start completely from scratch while his immigration lawyer fights to bring him & his brother home through the courts — a process that will take at least 6-9 months, if not years.
What Hilario Needs
While he rebuilds his life and waits for the legal system to correct this injustice, Hilario cannot return to work in the US where his entire business was based.
This campaign is to help Hilario stabilize his life — to cover basic expenses, living costs, and legal support while he navigates a truly difficult moment in his life.
Your donation will go directly toward:
• Temporary housing and basic living expenses
• Food, transportation, and medical needs
• Legal fees and filing costs
• Supporting Hilario while he cannot work
• Helping him rebuild until he’s able to return to Oregon
Every dollar helps. Truly.
Hilario is one of the kindest, most hardworking people you could ever meet. He has taken care of our homes, our gardens, our businesses — and now it’s our turn to take care of him. Please help however you can, and share this campaign widely.
Why This Matters
Hilario and his brother were not doing anything wrong. They weren’t hiding. They weren’t breaking the law. They were simply working — serving the community they’ve always served — when ICE chose to target them for no reason other than the color of their skin.
As Hilario wrote to me: “We didn’t do anything bad. We are hardworking people. We just want to work.”
He deserves dignity. He deserves safety. He deserves the chance to return to the home and business he built.
