Dr Thomas Hooyer Memorial Scholarship

Introduction:
My name is James Amato, I am 36 years old, and I am from Milwaukee, WI. I recently graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. In mid-July, I will begin a challenging 500 mile solo-hike along the Pacific Crest Trail in the High Sierra. In Spring of 2014, a school mentor and dear friend, Dr. Thomas Hooyer from UW-Milwaukee was diagnosed with ALS. Sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS is an invariably fatal neurological disease. I want to use my hike as an opportunity to raise awareness about ALS and put together a memorial scholarship at UW-Milwaukee in Tom’s name. I am doing this hike to celebrate life, and I am asking you to donate to help celebrate and honor the life of Tom’ Hooyer. Maybe you want to give because you know Tom or myself, or maybe you want to give because this story simply resonates with you. Either way, any amount donated will help keep this scholarship alive for the next several years. Please share, please donate, and please hug the ones you love everyday!

Meet Tom:
After receiving his PhD in geology and geophysics from Iowa State University in 1999, Tom Hooyer joined the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey in Madison, Wisconsin, where he primarily mapped glacial deposits and landforms created by the last great ice sheet to cover North America. In 2009, Tom moved to Milwaukee where he was an associate professor of geology at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. His research interests include glacier erosion, basal till deformation beneath ice sheets, and the Quaternary history of Wisconsin. Recent research projects include field studies of fabric development of drumlins in Wisconsin and Iceland, bedrock erosion in Canada and Switzerland, and the mapping of Quaternary deposits in Wisconsin. Tom has enjoyed hobbies that kept him outside as well. In his 20's he biked thorough Europe and backpacked through Africa. In his 30s and 40s his interests shifted to iron mans, bike racing, and skiing over a dozen Birkebeiners. Tom, 52, is married to Anne Medeiros and father of 2 beautiful children: Nieve, 5, and Nolan, 3. In Spring of 2014, Tom was diagnosed ALS.

About ALS:
ALS is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. Eventually, all muscles under voluntary control are affected, and individuals lose their strength and the ability to move their arms, legs, and body. When muscles in the diaphragm and chest wall fail, people lose the ability to breathe without ventilatory support. Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within 3 to 5 years from the onset of symptoms. However, about 10 percent of those with ALS survive for 10 or more years. Meet James:
James is a recent graduate from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. In August 2013, James assisted Dr. Thomas Hooyer (UW-Milwaukee) and Dr. Neil Iverson (Iowa State University) as a student worker on their drumlin formation research project in Iceland. Under the guidance of Dr. Hooyer, James went on to conduct his own undergraduate research project investigating the direction of ice flow on drumlins. He presented his results at a handful of conferences around the United States and was awarded the UW-Milwaukee Geosciences Undergraduate Research Scholarship in 2014. James begins work on his Masters degree in Fall 2015 at UW-MIlwaukee under the supervision of Dr. John Isbell. An Eagle Scout and lover of the outdoors, James Amato’s passion to hike and explore defines his character. For more information, please visit http://www.jamesamato.com  .

About the Hike:
The Pacific Crest Trail spans 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington. James will hike 500 miles of the trail in the High Sierra from Kennedy Meadows to Sierra City from July 24th to approximately August 26th. The first 200+ miles of the hike will run in conjunction with The John Muir Trail and pass through what many backpackers say is the finest mountain scenery in the United States. This is a land of 13,000/14,000-foot peaks, of lakes in the thousands, and of canyons and granite cliffs. James will visit some of the crown jewels of America’s park system: Yosemite, John Muir and Ansel Adams Wildernesses, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, including the summit of the tallest peak in the lower 48 states, Mount Whitney (elv 14,505 ft). By the end of the hike, James will have trekked a total elevation gain/loss of around 80,000 ft. For more information, please visit http://www.pcta.org.

About the Scholarship:
The Dr Thomas S. Hooyer Scholarship/Memorial Fund will support undergraduate and graduate students at UW-Milwaukee in Quaternary field research projects. The annual $500 grant will cover expenses for domestic and international field research.
