Walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks for Hugh

On the 24th of August, myself, Karl Matthews, Jamie Divine, Jayden Brotherton and Dee Mctoal will be taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge — 24 miles, 3 mountains, and we’re aiming to complete it in under 12 hours.

This will be tough for me — I’m not in my best shape, so pushing myself to do it in that time will be a real challenge. But after meeting Hugh’s parents and hearing their story, I knew I wanted to help.

About Hugh

Hugh is 15 years old and was born with FoxG1 syndrome — a condition so rare there are only around 1,200 known cases worldwide. It means he has profound disabilities, complex health needs, and suffers life-threatening seizures. He requires round-the-clock care.

Despite all of this, Hugh is full of joy and resilience. What he needs now is a specialist power wheelchair — the Permobil F5 Corpus. This will not only give him comfort and long-term health benefits, but also something he’s never had before: the chance to move his own chair and even rise into a standing position.

The Permobil F5 Corpus is a power chair that will not only enable Hugh’s friends and family to take him to lots of new places, but will, for the first time ever, give Hugh the chance to independently move his own chair. In addition, the chair can rise into a standing position so that Hugh can see the world at a whole new level. Not only is this important in terms of his long-term physical health, but it also allows him to experience the things many of us take for granted; standing up to cheer when his brother scores a goal, standing during his favourite song at his next gig. The chair will last Hugh for many years to come and will bring him freedom, a sense of independence and a chance to see the world at a different height.

The cost of this life-changing chair is £33,000.

Why We’re Doing This

Meeting Hugh’s parents inspired me deeply. Their strength and love for their son was incredible to see. So we’ve decided to dedicate this challenge to Hugh — to walk for him, to push ourselves for him, and to do whatever we can to help raise the money he needs.
