Hike for Hospice of Waterloo
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Nour, and I am fundraising for the Hospice of Waterloo in honour of my mother, Rola.
In 2018, our lives changed forever when my mother collapsed and was taken to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a very rare cancer known as GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumour), which accounts for less than 1% of all gastrointestinal tumours. From that moment, our lives would never be the same.
Since her diagnosis, my mother has fought to conquer this dreadful illness; doctors advised her this is a slow-growing cancer which doesn't metastasize. However, that was not the case for my mom. She fought this dreadful disease with every ounce of her being, and Despite undergoing a total gastrectomy, two liver resections, and gallbladder removal, as well as numerous traditional treatments and chemotherapy in the hope of eradicating the tumour, we were devastated to learn that cancer had continued to metastasized and the few available medical treatments were ineffective.
This year has marked the most challenging period in my mother's prolonged fight. On February 17, she was admitted to Grand River Hospital in Waterloo. Unfortunately, after two months of battling, we were informed that there were no further treatment options. On April 19, a week after her 61st birthday, we were told she had only weeks left and was moved to the Hospice of Waterloo. It is the loving and caring team at the hospice that has made a significant difference in her life, providing her with the strength to continue her fight for a miracle while unfortunately nearing her final days.
Cancer affects everybody these days; it's one of those things that you can't seem to get away from. However, having an incredible team like the one you find at the Hospice of Waterloo makes going through your end-of-life transition more comforting.
My mother loves life, and her optimistic outlook and extraordinary spirit have sustained her thus far. Amidst her pain and suffering, the excellent staff and volunteers at the hospice have not only provided my mom with joy and serenity but have also been a source of comfort for all our loved ones. This remarkable institution operates thanks to the generous contributions of friends, family, and the community. The Hospice of Waterloo ensures that its residents and their families can still savour life's small pleasures, even in the final stages. Volunteers offer massage therapy, hair salon treatments, therapeutic services (including Reiki, reflexology, and pet therapy), and bedside nail painting to help residents relax and maximize their remaining time.
Each year, the hospice organizes a hike to raise funds to develop further and enhance this facility. This year, I have joined the effort with a fundraising goal of $20000. All donations will directly benefit Waterloo Hospice.
Every contribution is valuable, and we would appreciate it if you could make one and share our story. Donations over $20 are eligible for a receipt. The hike will occur on September 22, and donations will be collected until then.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for dedicating time to read our story and for any assistance and support you can provide. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, means the world to us.
May God bless you and your loved ones.
