Support HIGUITA: a USC student film

My name is Nilanjana and I am the writer/director of this short film. I am accompanied by producer Maggie Colombo and director of photography Luke Dorado. We as a team need to fundraise $1,750 to shoot "HIGUITA". Named after the Colombian football goalkeeper Rene Higuita - who is infamous for leaving his goalkeeping position to play as striker mid game - this story follows a similar feat of crossing sociopsychal boundaries to accomplish a goal. Although in this metaphorical iteration, the name is simply an allegory to this idea. It is instead a widowed mother who, in the climax of the film, abandons her position as an audience member and defies social confines to join her fearstriken son on the stage. In an area where she is not supposed to be, she is - and magic happens. Her goal, although not sportlike in nature, she scores.
Higuita explores themes of grief, isolation and reconciliation in a spiritual lens. How does the loss of a father and husband drive apart a family? What does it take to understand one another? How does the presence of those who have passed still appear in one’s life?
I want the viewer to feel in its utmost essence the power of death and then further the even greater power of love. This is a story of hope, of a mother and son finding their way back to one another, despite trying times and heartbreak. A story of a boy who resorts to an internal refuge in the times of emotional turmoil. A retreat from harsh and alienating realities. A survival of vulnerable curiosities and creativities. And finally a mother’s rescue.

Please join my team and I in creating this film. The smallest donations can go a long way!

Kindest regards,
Nilanjana, Luke and Maggie
