Highland Springs is known for producing some of the greatest sports teams in the greater Richmond area. (The football team recently won back to back state titles!)
Interest in the possibility of expanding this tradition by establishing other sports teams at the school is striking. Fifty-two athletes—many of whom played on the famed state championship football teams—recently attended a lacrosse interest meeting.
With enough support, the team will begin operating as a club sport next year (2017-18). The intention is to establish VHSL accreditation during the 2018-19 school year.
We are excited to announce that the team will be under the helm of Steve Shoul. Steve, who is currently a resource officer at the school, has been an instrumental force in growing the sport throughout the greater Richmond area. Most notably, Steve is credited for starting the highly successful lacrosse programs at Glen Allen and Hermitage High School. We look forward to his efforts to establish another successful program at Highland Springs.
Things continue to move in the right direction for the proposed program. We are happy to report that US lacrosse recently announced that it will fund equipment for 20 players. While this is significant, the program still needs uniforms, balls, goals, and other basic equipment. As many of you know, starting a new program requires a significant financial commitment. So, it is with great humility and appreciation that we ask for your support as we strive to make this program available to student athletes at Highland Springs High School.
