High School Journalism Institute 2023

The High School Journalism Institute is a one-of-a-kind learning opportunity for student journalists in Oregon and southwest Washington – offered at no charge to students, thanks to community support.

Over the eight-day program, students learn the fundamentals of journalism, then use those skills to report and photograph real news stories on and around the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. Those stories are published in a 32-page-plus newspaper, as well as on OregonLive, in The Oregonian and by other supporting media organizations.

The program, which is intended to promote diversity in media by reducing barriers to entry, has inspired hundreds of young journalists in its nearly three-decade history. Many have gone on to professional careers in journalism, including some whose names are familiar to readers, listeners and viewers of news in the Pacific Northwest.

The program’s instructors, mentors and editors are all professional journalists, many from The Oregonian/OregonLive or other news organizations who volunteer their employees’ time to ensure the program is free of charge for students.

The program has significant additional costs, though, including food and housing for students and faculty, supplies, activities and additional instructors. They are offset in part by contributions from the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation and the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

Your contribution can help us further reduce barriers to participation by funding transportation to and from the Oregon State University campus, stipends for students who work during the summer to support their families, and additional instructors, which will allow more students to participate.
