High Hopes for Harrie

Hello! For those who may not know me, I am Lisa O’Connell, and Heidi and Nate are two of my dearest friends in the world. I’ve known Heidi since college, and she is easily the kindest, most caring and giving person I have ever known. I am fundraising for them because right now, they could use a little help from their friends!

 

Heidi and Nate’s beautiful daughter made a speedy entry into this world on June 20th, 2021. Harrie was born at only 24 weeks’ gestation when her mom was lifeflighted for emergency C section due to development of preeclampsia in its most severe form, HELLP syndrome. Harrie weighed less than 1 pound when she was born, and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for 5 months. She’s fought every life-threatening battle and won, overcoming more in her few months of life so far than many people will over a whole lifetime! Harrie is by far the best thing to ever happen to her parents- she is the most treasured gift imaginable, and has already touched so many people with her courage, strength, and perseverance. Despite the many hurdles presented her, her doctors have said they have “high hopes for Harrie.” But much of the future is yet uncertain, and prolonged hospitalization and need for specialized home care have been and will be mentally, emotionally, and financially expensive for her family.

 

During a time in their lives when they should be basking in the glow of their new family and celebrating the birth of their first child, life dealt Heidi and Nate some unexpected struggles as their daughter arrived way too early. As Heidi recovered from an emergency c-section to save her life, they started adjusting to the new norms of a caring for a micro preemie as well as the unanticipated financial impacts of this adventure…5 months in the NICU, medical expenses, travel expenses and juggling work schedules……all so worth it but putting them in a tough financial position.
