Missing Shane, Loving Carrie...
Donation protected
Dear friends and family of Shane and Carrie,
By now you have heard of the sudden and tragic events of yesterday.
I am Carrie's 'Aunt Barbara' from Philadelphia. The details I have are incomplete, but, as a nurse myself, I have seen this very thing happen without warning and right before my eyes. Here is what I know:
Shane had surgery two weeks ago and was home recuperating. He was getting into bed in the middle of the night when he became short of breath. Right then and there, he had a pulmonary embolus, and died before Carrie's helpless and unbelieving eyes.
He was a young man. He was a talented man. He was our friend...but to Carrie, he 'was her heart and her world.' Her heart is broken.
Few of us can imagine what this is like for Carrie and her family, nor Shane's family. It is too painful to even think about. And as days and months go on, it will change in tenor but not be less easy.
There are few ways to offer practical help, given that many of us are not even local. Carrie has been overwhelmed with your sweet and compassionate messages on facebook and by other means. I too have read every one and have been struck by your loving, overwhelming support and response to her.
During the night I thought about these things, as well as my helplessness to do much, and thought about what my own financial picture would look like with loss of a spouse, (and income), burial expenses and needed time off from work to grieve and plan. I thought that it was the perfect time to engage all of us to help financially even when we can't offer a lot more.
I know hospital workers. I'm one of you. I know your care and compassion and even your burn out from sad situations. But I know your resilence and generosity, and your ability to surround your work family with love and care and resourses.
I also know the power of families to come together in times of crisis to give love and support in ways too numerous to name.
And I know friends and the power it is to be one, in a time of crisis. Who can provide more support?
I am hoping we can, together, raise a nice bucketful of money for Carrie, to reduce this part of the burden for her. This fund gives ALL of us a way to help in a practical way.
Will you consider giving even a small donation? Will you share this on your Facebook page so people within your own circle of friends and relatives can be offered the opportunity to make a difference to her?
Thank you so much for being who you are to Shane and to Carrie and to their families. To know you are not alone in a crisis means the difference between hope and despair.
Keep praying that God's grace gives Carrie what she needs for the days and months ahead.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
