The past twelve weeks has been very challenging. Her life was suddenly threatened and she had to undergo three major open stomach surgeries which included being placed in an induced coma for five days. One month later she had to be rushed back to the hospital with a life threatening blood infection. Her life has been saved twice in two months due to the great work done by the doctors and nurses at the Candler Hospital.  Consequently her medical expenses continues to increase and she has not been able to work. 

Still battling Stage 4 Colon Cancer.  In September of 2018, My mother Althiea was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer. Suddenly her life had changed! 

The doctors removed the portion of the colon that was affected which resulted in the use of a colostomy bag. After three months of radiation treatment she was declared cancer free. 

5 months later a CT scan revealed that mom has developed metastasis of the liver. So once again the cancer was back, only this time it was a Stage 4. Mom started treatment at a Treatment Center in Atlanta where she underwent further chemo and  radiation treatment complemented by pills. This treatment improved her cancer status however she still needed several more surgeries over a period of two years. Today the cancer has regressed thanks to the robust treatment and the astute work of the oncology team at in Atlanta.

My mother’s insurance covered some of her treatments, medication  and surgeries however the out-of-pocket costs are very high.
