Hello, my name is Donna.
I have worked for West Midlands Ambulance Service for around 15 years and have worked on the front line throughout the pandemic. During this time, many people have asked "Is there anything we can give to you, to show how much we value you all?" We always politely decline as we think "Its just our job."
However, I am now reaching out and asking for your help.
I have a very close friend who has unfortunately received some devastating news, and this is also impacting on the people who love her dearly.
Carol Player, despite previously beating cancer - was diagnosed again in November 2019 after almost 5 years of cancer free scans, when spots were found in her liver. Doctors decided the best course of action was to re-section her liver taking away 14% to remove the diseased area. This was very successful. However, 3 months later after a follow up scan, more spots had travelled into her liver in multiple areas which meant another re-section would not be an option. Doctors have advised the best treatment for Carol would be a trial drug called Delcath Melferlan Chemosaturation, which has proven to be very successful for Carol’s type of cancer. Until COVID19 materialised, it was available on the NHS and Carol was a suitable candidate, however the Government have since stopped funding for all trial drugs.
Carol is still able to have the treatment - at a substantial cost of £160,000.
All of Carol's friends and family are doing everything that they can to raise this amount of money and even Carol herself, who has cashed in her pension for this treatment. At the age of 56, Carol has so much more life to live, including seeing her two year old twin grandchildren Jack & James grow.
So, as I have nothing else to offer, I will be 'Braving the Shave' - a sponsored head shave to raise funds. I would be extremely grateful for any donations.
We hope that this trial treatment may go on to save more peoples lives, but for now, we fight for Carol's.
Thank you for all of your support.
