I came to Mexico to work and surprisingly, one night I was out getting some food at the convenience store, and I saw a malnourished, extremely adorable dog eating out of a garbage bag on the side of the street. It was about 1am and I decided I wanted to help him out. I went back inside of the store and purchased a small bag of dog food for the stray. I went outside and ripped the bag open and put it on the ground and the dog quickly devoured its contents. The dog was scared and shaking and seemed to have dealt with some recent trauma so I asked my friend I was staying with if we could keep him for the night so that the next day, we could attempt to find him owners, if he had any. My friend agreed and the dog followed us back to the residence without hesitation. The next morning, I phoned my roommate at home in Canada, and she agreed to let me rescue Chance if he had nowhere to go and got along with other dogs. After a few days of walking the dog around the area I had no luck in finding him owners, he also didn’t have a collar and looked extremely underweight when I found him. I even let the dog lead the way when walking but he didn’t seem to want to pull me in any direction. After monitoring the dog and monitoring his interactions with my friend’s dog who I was staying with in Mexico, I decided to bring him to the vet and start researching how I can adopt him and bring him home to Canada with me.
After visiting the vet, we found that he was most likely abandoned. He received all necessary shots, vaccines, and treatments such as deworming, Flea and Tick and we set up an additional appointment with another more reputable Vet that could get him ready to be approved to travel to Canada.
After a few days of no luck with trying to find him a way home on a flight with me or on another flight, I was lucky enough to be connected with “No Boarders Animal Rescue” which provided me with crucial information on travelling from Mexico to Canada with an adopted dog. They were very helpful and assisted me the whole process as well as acted as a translator for my vet visit.
While at the 2nd vet appoint with the new vet, they did blood work to make sure he was healthy enough to fly and wanted to make sure he didn’t have heart worm or any other concerning issues before coming through the boarder. During the appointment they found out that he suffers from Cryptorchidism, which is when one or both testicles fail to drop down into the scrotum. Undescended testicles can become cancerous and/or twisted, so it's important to have them removed while your dog is young. They assumed that this is why he was abandoned by his owners here in Mexico. They also found out that he needs to be on 2 weeks of antibiotics as he had a very low blood platelet reading and needed to get him healthy to undergo surgery and to travel back with me. I have paid for his vet bills up to date, out of my own pocket and had to extend my trip for him to heal as well as find a new place for him and I to stay as we weren’t able to stay at my friends' house with another dog any longer, and I didn’t want to cause any problems as they don’t allow multiple pets in the unit. I found the cheapest air BNB I could in a safe area. I have purchased a flight approved kennel and it has already arrived and we are now in a new space so he can get healthy, getting used to his kennel/crate and we can plan for my return home. I had a solo flight booked home for Feb 4th, but they don’t take dogs on their airline, and my return tickets wasn’t refunded, only credited so I have to purchase a new ticket with Chance to return to Canada.
Now that I have exceeded my personal funds that I had planned for this work trip, rescuing Chance, and extending my trip a few days, as well as finding a new home for him and I to stay while here this all has left me pretty much broke and I have no funds left to purchase a ticket to come home with him. I plan to fly with West Jet, but also will look into Air Canada as well as per the rescue’s advice. I am reaching out because I have exercised all resources and I need some help to get him and I home in the next 2 weeks. Any funds I receive will assist us so greatly so we can eat while here, afford any extended accommodation depending on flight availability, and would cover our flight home. Flights have been difficult to book due to weather and Covid, so as long as we can get some help, the unknown won’t be so stressful on us, and we can safely arrive in Canada together. Chance is a 3-year-old as per the 2nd vet, lab mix. He is extremely friendly and sweet, and he won’t leave my side. There is no way I would have the heart after all this investment to just send him back on the streets. He has been attacked various times by other strays when we’re walking and doesn’t seem to be able to fight back or stick up for himself. He’s an angel and we’d truly appreciate any help we can get to make this happen and give him a good life as well as provide me with a companion.
Please help bring us home!
