Ed Barney's ALS Medical/Family Fund

Ed Barney, husband and father of two beautiful girls, was leading the life of any normal man, working and enjoying life with his family and friends, until he began to notice a tingling in his right arm and then loss of strength and ability to grip objects with his right hand.   After several months of testing and doctor appointments, he was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig ’s disease, on December 31, 2013 at the age of 43.

Upon diagnosis of ALS, patients live 2-5 years on average, with approximately 10% living 10 years or more.  There is no meaningful treatment for ALS. There is no cure.

Since then, Ed has completely lost the use of his right hand/ arm and is currently experiencing the same type of problems in his left hand/arm.  He is also becoming unsteady on his feet and is currently using a cane.  Although he has access to a scooter and a wheelchair, he is currently unable to use them, as their home does not have a wheel chair ramp.  Likewise, there are several interior doorways that are not wide enough, nor is the bathroom handicap accessible.

Ed is kind-hearted, witty, positive, and optimistic despite all of the challenges that he faces on a daily basis.  His beautiful wife, Nikki, has been right there beside him, helping and supporting him with endless love and devotion.  Their daughters, Caitlin, age 9, and Brooke, age 5, are Ed’s biggest cheerleaders, empowering him with their beautiful smiles, encouraging words, and lending hands to help their daddy.

Ed has continued to work up to this point, but he is facing the reality that he will not be able to work much longer due to the fatigue and pain that come with this disease.  Worries about daily living expenses, financing the necessary modifications to their house, medication costs, and medical bills are looming, which is reason for this fundraiser.

Funds raised will go towards modifying their home for wheelchair accessibility and costs associated with medications, medical equipment, medical bills, daily costs of living, and college funds for their children.

We appreciate any support that you can provide to this beautiful family.  Thank you and Happy Holidays!
