We are looking to our community for support in crowdfunding our incredible mother through her final stretch of completing her degree in Mental Health Nursing. Through all the difficulties she achieved a First in her dissertation and is looking to start her graduate nursing role.
However, this has come with many different challenges - namely losing our grandmother who raised us with our mother, her only child, in March 2023 and our father in October 2023. Multiple funerals in one year is something a family should never experience.
Our father, a banker at BHP Bank Nigeria - now Stirling Bank - at the time, was wrongly accused of fraud within the bank he worked in and dismissed; an accusation that destroyed his career and livelihood. After 13 years of fighting this wrongful accusation, his name was cleared and he won a settlement of 250 million Naira (equivalent to £122,000 as of September 2025) in January 2024. However, this promise of freedom came far too late as my father had unexpectedly passed away a mere three months before this settlement was decided. As he was deceased, Stirling Bank Nigeria decided that this compensation would be denied to our family as his beneficiaries as my father was not alive to claim it.
This compensation would have been both transformative and life-changing for our family. This gross injustice, symptomatic of the dire state of Nigeria today, left my mother to carry the crushing financial and emotional weight of this untimely loss on her own. The process of trying to relieve this significant financial strain resulted in the accumulation of debts as we wait for justice that may never come.
During the first year of our mother’s studies, a discriminatory misjudgement from Student Finance England resulted in her becoming a self-funded student, ineligible for support from the government. She was forced to continue working full time alongside her studies to support herself and our family. The additional financial stress of school fees have exacerbated her struggles with her health issues, after being diagnosed with Lupus - an incurable autoimmune disease. Consistent flare ups have made it immensely for her to complete everyday activities, which has also negatively affected her mental health.
Despite being faced with such adversity, our mother continues to relentlessly fight for herself and her four children and we want to help her cross the finish line!
The funds raised will go towards:
- Supporting our mum as she transitions into her career in mental health nursing.
- Helping our family move forward despite Nigeria's unjust system.
- Relieving the financial pressure and debt that has built up over the years.
Thank you for reading, and for any support you can give. Your support means the world to us.
