Race4Rene - Trans Atlantic Yacht Race

We are Race4Rene. We are sailing across the Atlantic because we believe that asking for help shouldn't be as hard as crossing an Ocean.
In January 2017, René Zamudio took his own life after suffering from severe depression, aged just 22 years old.
René was the most wonderful, loving and beautiful person. He was kind, thoughtful, diplomatic and wise with a glorious sense of humour. He was incredibly intelligent and an ambitious young man. René had a huge effect on a lot of people. The love that so many people felt for René will live on in our memories and the steps we take to save other lives now. We shall cherish forever his incredible smile and we are forever unbelievably proud of René, the most loving son, brother and friend.
Whilst we cannot travel back in time to help René, we can do something now to prevent this from happening to others.
We are a crew of René’s family, school friends, rowing teammates, and co-workers. We are sailing across the Atlantic in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) 2019, from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia, starting on the 24th November, and lasting approximately 16 days. Our sailing experience is varied and limited, and for many this will constitute our first time sailing.
The challenge will be gruelling: we will have little sleep, it will be freezing, we will argue and be unable to avoid one another, we will face 30ft waves, we will be violently seasick, and, after all of this, we may not even make it across. We are doing this because we believe that finding help should not be as difficult as crossing an ocean. We want to show everyone just how much stigma there is against people with mental health conditions, and just how hard it is for people like René to find the help they need. We are also raising money for two charities: PAPYRUS and Child Bereavement UK. Our target is to raise £50,000 for each charity.
Chartering the yacht that we will be crossing the Atlantic in will cost £19,500, and we appreciate any donations you can make to help us fund the Race4Rene campaign!
