This is my sister's story:
My husband had a new job opportunity that opened in Utah which also gave us a chance to be closer to my family. So, we sold our home in Virginia, drove across country with our five children and moved in with Grandma and Grandpa. Our house hunting became discouraging when we realized house prices were much more than where we came from. We couldn't find a home that we could afford. Then my Dad came up with the idea to sell their big home to us because they didn't need that much space anymore. He planned to then build an apartment over the garage for he and my Mom to live in. Afterall, he had built their home years ago, how hard could a little apartment be?
He was making great progress with the help of his four son-in-laws. Every weekend was a building party, supported by his grandchildren eager to "learn the trade". Sunday, Sept 27, around 5:00 p.m., as he bent over to put a pair of shoes on to go to a Sunday meeting, he collapsed. We found out later that it was a massive pulmonary embolism (bloodclot). He had 3 cardiac arrests on the way to and at the hospital, then was life flighted to a specialty hospital. Over the next 24 hours, he went from okay, to the surgeon requesting permission to stop the life saving operation. Apparently, the CPR had sliced the liver, the spleen, and damaged the kidneys. He was put on heart bypass and was bleeding out faster than blood could be replaced. He was given 115 units of blood. Finally, after a second operation the bleeding slowed. Now, we are waiting and hoping for baby steps of progress. The doctors continue to stress that his life is tenuous, but he is still alive, which is huge compared to where I thought we were yesterday.
Now, however, our Head Construction boss, (my Dad), is down, and will be for many months even if all goes extremely well. This leaves his unprotected construction of the apartment on hold. Between the work that still needs to be done on the house before winter, and the mounting medical bills, we appreciate any help you might be able to give. But, mostly we appreciate your prayers.
