Save the Salvo Day Use Cemetery
Donation protected
The Salvo Day Use Cemetery also known as the Midgett Cemetery in Salvo NC, is in a dire state. The shoreline has eroded a huge portion of the property and is washing away headstones and undermining and exposing graves. Every storm (of which can be several in a year’s time) or a good westerly wind takes away more of the shoreline.
The cemetery is located in the National Park Salvo Day Use area that thousands of people visit for recreational purposes, such as Kite Boarding, Wind Surfing, Fishing and Family Picnics. Many people stop to read the head stones and take pictures of the old cemetery. Always someone comments on why NPS does not preserve the cemetery.
The cemetery however is not part of Park property like many people assumed. It is considered private by the Local, State and Government Agencies. Because of that, the community and local organizations such as The Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo Civic Association, The Hatteras Island Genealogical and Preservation Society along with Descendants of the people buried in the cemetery, are having a hard time getting help with funding for preservation of the cemetery.
We need help to raise funds to run bulkheading and riprap along the property line to keep further erosion from washing out more of the cemetery. The cemetery is located in such a beautiful area of Hatteras Island; it is easy to see why the people buried there wanted it to be their final resting place. These are our forefathers and loved ones, who in their time dedicated their lives to the Life Saving Service and The Coast Guard. Others held important positions in their community. We are literally watching these people wash out to sea.
The estimated cost for this project is upwards of $120,000.
Time really is of the essence in this situation, Hurricane season is upon us and this will be a lengthy project that we need to get started on as soon as we possibly can.
All donations that are received will go completely to this project. Any money that may be left over from the bulkheading will be used to maintain the upkeep of the cemetery, re-setting the headstones and a memorial bench to put in the cemetery. Thank you for your help with this project.
