Fighting Lyme disease with Maureen!
Hi my name is Gary Wiberg and I started this fund, to help raise money to pay for my wife Maureen’s medical needs. Maureen has been dealing with chronic pain for over 12 years and is legally disabled. But that’s not what this fund raiser is all about. You see Maureen learned how to live with her chronic pain many years ago. That is until about three years ago.
Four years ago Maureen started to experience intestinal problems, joint problems and fatigue, to name a few of the many health issues that have arisen. We started a journey, from this doctor, to that doctor, to this specialist, to another specialist. I lost track of all of the doctors. None of these doctors had a diagnosis. Insurance paid some bills and Maureen paid the balance. All of these new health issues also made it difficult for Maureen to take care of her chronic pain. All Maureen wanted, was a diagnosis, so we could do what was necessary to get her back to some sense of normal.
In May of 2015 Maureen and I decided to see a specialist in Winona, MN, even though we would have to pay out of pocket. The doctor suspected Lyme disease and more than likely some co-infections. Well guess what? The insurance companies in all their wisdom won’t pay for most test or blood work, to find out if this is what you have! So we paid out of pocket. One trip to the doctor usually cost at least a thousand dollars and that doesn’t include medication costs. The results came back. Maureen was not only diagnosed with Lyme disease and a number of co-infections, but it is, Chronic Lyme Disease!
What’s the difference between Lyme and Chronic Lyme Disease? Basically it means that when you’ve had Lyme disease for so long, it has penetrated your entire body. This can include your internal organs, joints and nervous system.
The saddest part of this story is, fourteen years ago Maureen had a bite that turned into the bulls eye associated with Lyme disease and was given an antibiotic to take for thirty days. However the doctor didn’t tell her it was for Lyme. Maureen had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic within the first couple of days and went to the emergency room doubled over. The doctors at the emergency room told her to quit taking the antibiotic. The emergency room doctor also didn’t tell Maureen it was for Lyme. Maybe all of this could have been prevented fourteen years ago if Maureen knew how serious this was. Did the doctors know?
Well it’s been almost two years since the diagnosis and the medical bills jut keep coming. We’ve exhausted all our reserves and there’s no end in sight. People go blind, loose limbs, and people have even died from this disease. Please help me, help my wife.
The donations will be used to pay doctor bills, medical tests, medications and if needed, travel expences. One doctor visit cost us $550.00 plus medications. Medications usually cost $400.00 to $650.00.
Not only is Maureen a loving caring wife, she’s a mom, she’s a good friend to everyone she meets, she’s an amazing grandmother of twin, eight year old granddaughters and a five year old grandson. If you don’t know Maureen, I hope you have a chance to meet her some day. I think then, you’ll understand why I love her so much.
We are both Christians and we put our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ! Please keep Maureen in your prayers.
We are so thankful and grateful for any and all of your support. All my hopes and prayers are for Maureen to be able to have her life back. Maureen has dreams like all of us. Maureen wants to be the loving grandmother for her grandchildren and Maureen wants to be here for her children and mine. I love her and want her to be here for all of them and for me!
P.S. This is very humbling experience for both of us. We have both been the type of person that would never ask for help. This is different. For once I do need to ask. –Gary
