Cats Orphaned by Fire

We are Homes for Pets, a non-profit animal rescue group committed to saving animals in need and ensuring they are placed in loving, forever homes.  On March 21, a fire broke out in a San Antonio home belonging to Eva Watts, one of our former foster parents. Neighbors noticed the flames around 2 AM and called 911, but due to burglar bars on Eva's windows and doors, the fire department was unable to save her life. Her pet-sitter learned what happened and reached out to us. Eva devoted a large part of her life to saving animals, took great care of her pets, and tried saving the feral cats in her area. We are heartbroken by this loss.

Sadly, a number of the cats she cared for were inside when the fire broke out, but miraculously others escaped, although not without injury. Many of them are still slightly feral. We have been able to locate some, but not all, of her cats and are setting up live-traps in the area to find the rest and help them. We have learned there are six cats missing in addition to the four we’ve already taken in.

Most cats have been burned, all have suffered smoke inhalation, and many have other injuries, including one eye injury so severe the vet has recommended removing it. All the cats require antibiotics. They are in dire need of medical attention and human love and affection. Our organization is non-profit; we are in desperate need of funds to cover their veterinary care. We estimate we will need $[phone redacted] per cat to cover the medical costs of treating the cats.

You can help sponsor a cat in need. Your donation means a lot to us. It also means a lot to the cats you are helping save. Your contribution will give them a second chance at life following the traumatic loss of their home and their guardian angel, Eva Watts, who perished in her home while protecting four of her cats in her bathroom.

To better see what your donation goes toward, we included suggested donation amounts below, along with examples of veterinary costs. We are thankful for donations of all sizes!
