During the late evening and early morning hours of September 21-22, Furnace Town Historic Site fell victim to violent and senseless acts of vandalism. Over the course of several hours, six of the site’s historic buildings were damaged at varying levels of severity. Repairs are being coordinated and will include replacing and/or restoring many windows, doors, walls, and in some cases, items stolen from or damaged within the buildings. Though some items may be irreplaceable or irreparable, we are committed to repairing as much as possible.

Since initial restoration work on the furnace began in the 1960s and the Furnace Town Foundation Inc. was formed in 1982, Furnace Town has been a staple of Snow Hill and surrounding communities, holding the responsibility of preserving, restoring, and interpreting the site in order to educate and entertain the public. This act of vandalism has taken an emotional toll on those who love the site, in addition to the physical damage to the buildings and artifacts. The Executive Director, Board of Directors, and staff and volunteers of Furnace Town appreciate the love and support shown by so many in our community in the wake of this event, as well as the many offers of help received.

Funds donated to this campaign will be applied to repair costs caused by the vandalism of September 21-22. Though the future of Furnace Town feels uncertain at this time, the Director, Board, staff and volunteers are committed to restoring our beautiful site and welcoming our community back to the grounds as soon as possible.
