Heston Howa facing amputation

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Mark and I'm fundraising for Heston Howa. Heston has been known to my family since 1992, when my brother was doing a shallow well digging programme at the height of Malawi’s worst drought. Heston was living in one of the villages and was an enthusiastic helper. We often sent him to deliver messages by bicycle to the village chiefs and communities. As an adult this turned into a career working in community development and HIV/AIDS care and prevention. On 17 August 2019 Heston was involved in a road traffic accident that caused life-long injuries to his forearm (segmental fracture of Radius and Ulna). Metal plates were inserted into the arm to hold the bones together. On 10th December 2020 he was a passenger in a minibus that collided with a lorry and the same arm was further damaged and, the plates dislodged causing chronic and severe pain. He has not been able to work and struggled to feed and send his 6 children to school. He’s spent and sold most of what he had. In a country where there is no real social safety net he has to find work or farm. He has managed to be selected for job interviews but has not been successful given his reduced mobility (25% incapacity). He has an insurance claim in process at the Malawi High Court since 28th March 2020 against the companies which owned the vehicles and which he thinks will be successful but the process is slow and bureaucratic. The next hearing will be on 28th November 2022. The metal screws in his arm have become infected and need to be replaced with bone from his hip at a private clinic by 13th June 2022. The only other option is amputation of the arm at the local public hospital. We are looking for a total of £3000 to cover the operation, post-care and, his children’s school fees for one year. If the infection can be controlled and the pain reduced, Heston can continue an active life working for the development of communities in Malawi.
