Hi my name is Lewis,
Originally, I had set myself the challenge of cycling 75 miles from Lurgan Frenchpark to Croagh Patrick, then climbing the mountain. When my Grandad was young, he cycled to the mountain, climbed it, and cycled back—a feat that’s truly inspiring. Upon reflection, the honest truth is that I’m not fit enough, and I haven’t had the time to do any proper training, so I won’t be able to complete the cycling portion of the challenge.
I will still do the climb, and I’m going to attempt it barefoot to try and make up for not doing the cycle—I’ll have my runners in my backpack just in case!
Croagh Patrick is no mean feat; I’ve done it a few times, and each time it’s been a real challenge. Fair play to anyone who tackles it, and everyone is welcome to join me on the day, runners or no runners.
I know people have kindly donated, and I don’t want to let them down, so we’ll see how it goes. I also think it’s important to remember, in life as in challenges like this, that it’s okay to admit when something isn’t possible.
We often set ourselves standards and expectations that are too high and run ourselves into the ground trying to meet them, and sometimes life just gets in the way.
This is my way of doing what I can, honestly and safely, while still honoring the spirit of the challenge.
Everyone is welcome to join me at @11am Saturday August 15th 2026, Croagh Patrick Co.Mayo
My Grandad Ted, passed away last October. This challenge is to Honor his Memory and also to raise funds for the children’s ward at Castlebar Hospital. When our son was six weeks old, he became ill and spent four nights there. Myself and my Wife Tanya were exhausted and worried, but a reclining chair in his room made all the difference — allowing us to stay close and rest. At the time there was only one in the entire hospital, so I want to help fund another possibly a few, for future families.
Any support would be greatly appreciated
