Her Vote Counts!

You can tell people of the need to struggle, but when the powerless start to see that they really can make a difference, nothing can quench the fire.

- Leymah Gbowee, Liberian peace activist, Nobel Peace Laureate

Facia Harris is on the front lines of Liberia’s democracy movement – engaging those who have been voiceless and overcoming the legacy of a tragic civil war. We met Facia in August when she joined our team at the League of Women Voters of California on a State Department Fellowship. In Liberia, she has worked as a journalist and an advocate for gender equality, expanding the educational access and democratic participation of young women. Facia is an amazing community leader and a courageous voice for democratic ideals and civil society. We have been inspired by her story and her vision for Liberia’s future. She recently returned to Liberia (and her three-year-old daughter) to continue her groundbreaking work.

In January 2016, Facia is launching Her Vote Counts, an ambitious project to identify, train, and support 100 young women as Civic Peer Educators. This project will bring new voices into Liberia's critical 2017 election.

Please join us in helping get this important project off the ground. We pledge to cover any admin fees charged by GoFundMe, so 100% of your donation goes directly to helping train a new generation of young Liberian leaders!

Facia in her own words

I believe young people, especially women, are the future of my country’s democracy. This can only be, though, if we invest in empowering young women leaders. They need adequate tools to become democracy builders.

In 2017, Liberia will go through a crucial presidential and general election vital to preserving peace in our country. A peace that Liberian women have sacrificed deeply for. Women make up 49 percent of our population, and the majority are young and would be voting for the first time in their lives.

Inspired by the work of the League of Women Voters of California, and my unwavering belief in women’s leadership and democracy, I am launching a campaign to train 100 first-time female voters between the ages of 18-23 years old. Once trained, these women will lead a massive civic and voter education campaign to teach their peers about their right to vote and the power that informed participation has to both promote democracy and improve their livelihoods.

Please help support project “Her Vote Counts”: Liberia’s Democracy Builders.

For only $20, you can provide the education and training a young woman needs to become a democracy builder. Help strengthen a women’s movement and promote grassroots democracy building in Liberia!
