St Peter’s church, designed by John Loughborough, was completed in 1877 and in 1894 plans to decorate the chancel started. Clayton and Bell were commissioned to embellish the chancel with mural and stencil decorations. The decorations include 11 saints.
Unfortunately, the splendour of the decorative art has diminished over the century due to the passing of time and some recent water damage.
The sources of the water damage have been identified and fixed and a specialist firm has completed a conservation survey. Now, we’re committed to bringing this unique treasure back to its full, original glory.
Restoring the entire chancel is a major undertaking, expected to cost in region of £100,000. While we are actively chasing grant options, many come with conditions requiring us to raise 50% of the funds ourselves.
Can you help us preserve this beautiful piece of local heritage? Every contribution brings us closer to our goal. Come and see the murals for yourself when the church is open or by appointment.
Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us.
