Herschel recently started racing BMX in the 50-year-old bracket alongside our son Noah who is 14 and also racing. Sunday, July 1, 2018 Herschel was racing in his second race of the day. As he was about to finish second place when he crashed after hitting the last rhythm section and landed on his head with direct impact. Herschel said, “as soon as I hit the lights went out!” He woke up finally and someone was starting to take of his helmet and thankful he was lucid enough to tell them to stop because he couldn’t feel his legs. I truly thank the Lord he woke up in time because that could have been detrimental possibly damaging his spinal cord more permanently. When I got the call initially from Noah I was thinking he was kidding around because Noah has done this to me before! Someone else got on the phone and confirmed that yes it was true, and that Herschel was being taken to the local hospital also level one trauma center for care. Noah rode with his dad to the hospital in the ambulance and I have to say it was very difficult listening to my poor son cry on the phone and I could do nothing to comfort him. Our oldest son Josh jumped into his car to get up north as soon as possible to be with his brother and dad until I could get packed and get there. Knowing this would be an extended stay and since my frame of mind was all over the place I asked my father to go with me.
We arrived at the hospital at about 11pm and I was able then to see Herschel. They were doing stuff to him, so I wasn’t able to go right in so that gave me a minute to get myself together because I could feel a flood of tears coming on. I sucked it in and smiled and said “hey you, it’s usually me in the hospital. I guess it’s your turn now!” He smiled and gave me a kiss!
The surgery took between 6-7 hours. The doctor went into the front of his neck and remove his C-6,7 & T-1. He put a something in called a cage that will serve has his bones and theyfused this to the rest of his spine. He received to 2 liters of blood. The good news is that initially when they did the nerve test he had no response in his feet but after taking out the broken bones and putting the cage in they did the nerve test and had response in his feet.
He is having limited movement in his arms and right leg. Nothing in right leg at this time but can feel. Herschel will have extensive rehab and at this point we don’t know where that will be.
I am staying in a local hotel and have had a lot of support in prayers and well wishes! I appreciate that more than I can express. Continue to pray for Herschel and that his pain will decrease.
