I’m on a mission to raise funds for a transformative experience that will bring together 20 veterans for a free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) retreat from June 27-29, 2025. Imagine a safe haven where these heroes can connect, support one another, and reclaim their lives through the power of BJJ. With an alarming average of 44 plus veterans lost to suicide each day, we must act now to provide hope and healing. Your support can help make this vital retreat a reality.
Every day, an estimated 44 plus veterans take their own lives. Tragically, more veterans have died by suicide since 1999 than the names etched on the Vietnam Memorial. I nearly became one of those statistics, but thanks to another veteran, I was rushed to the ER and spent a week in the ICU, followed by two weeks hospitalized for PTSD.
In 2018, my life began to spiral out of control, and I needed an outlet. I discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which has since transformed my life for the better. BJJ has strong similarities to the military and helps you to live in the moment. Through it, I’ve achieved many personal goals, including winning a world title and competing at the UFC Apex. My experiences led to podcast opportunities where I shared my story and how BJJ has been a lifeline for me and many other veterans.
Research has shown that BJJ can significantly help veterans struggling with PTSD. When the owner of Backwoods BJJ Retreat heard my story, he generously offered his cabin just outside Twain Harte, situated on nearly 7 acres with 250 feet of riverfront. The custom-built log cabin, completed in 1989, features three floors, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a game room, along with 700 square feet of mat space for training, making it an ideal setting for our retreat.
To make this happen, we need to cover food costs for 20 veterans, which includes one catered dinner for a warrior feast, as well as cleaning expenses, totaling around $2,000. We've received several cash donations but still need to raise $200. Your support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of these veterans. Thank you!
