STAY IN THE FIGHT-Jorge A Hernandez

On January 10th our lives changed forever. Our dad Jorge A. Hernandez (Anibal) was diagnosed with Extensive, Small-Cell Lung Cancer.

A lil bit of his story…….It was his first trip to the emergency room EVER. I could see the fear in his eyes. All throughout the process we tried our best to comfort him in explaining each exam and why it was necessary and not his perception that the hospital is "trying to milk his insurance". There was an enlarged lymph node, a tumor on his trachea (the bridge of his lungs), several tumors in both his lungs and lesions on his right lung. After 13 days in the hospital, countless lab tests, x-rays, a double biopsy and a chest tube he was finally discharged with a portable oxygen tank and was awaiting confirmation of delivery of his oxygen concentrator at home.

A week later he began a combo intravenous chemo drug treatment. It now has been 3 cycles of treatment and a re-scan. We have found that his body is not responding to the chemo. His tumors show no signs of progression. His cough has gotten worse and the tumor in his trachea is obstructing his airway.  Depending what position he is in he goes into coughing fits until he finds a comfortable position to be in.

He keeps saying he doesn’t want to be a burden to his children and though we are all trying our best, not all of us are in a financial situation to assist in the inevitable. Our Father is a very proud person and would never ask for any type of help.  He has always believed in working hard to overcome anything that life has thrown in your path.  Dad’s number one priority is his family and this is why we believe he keeps telling us that he does not want to be a burden.  Even though he is going through the pain of this terrible disease his main thoughts have been on the expenses and burden that we his children might have to bear. He knows we all work hard and have families of our own and that we sometimes struggle to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.  It pains him to be in a state of dependency when all our lives we have been dependent on him.  We would like to take care of our Dad until the time comes that the Lord decides to stop his pain and suffering and takes him into his kingdom.  Our Father has no idea we are doing this for him but we strongly believe in the kindness of people.  When his time with us has finally has come to an end we will let him know about the kindness that people have demonstrated towards him and that he has nothing to fear about the “burden” that his children will bear. We humbly ask for any donation to help give our dad a piece of mind in life. We want him to LIVE whatever life he has left. Not worrying about how everything will be taken care of.

Dad, We Love You. “STAY IN THE FIGHT”
