For the last two years our family went to Costa Rica on a missions trip to work alongside the local church, teach on foster parenting and learn about the beauty and culture of the country. In 2024, during a night of serving meals to the homeless, Jon and I sat next to a man in a wheelchair with a kind smile. (Some of you may remember this is the same night we met our dear friend Keila and her kids who now have a stable life in part because of incredibly generous GoFundMe donors! Praise God!) We conversed with this man in what I call "Spanglish charades" and learned of his journey from alcoholism to faith in Jesus and his love for wheelchair basketball.

When we returned in 2025, we were thrilled to reunite with Herman, who was now employed at a woodworking shop and eager to show us his handiwork. He struggled to navigate the gravel pathway and waited for help to make it up the ramp as we entered. His chair was in rough shape and it struck me just how many obstacles Herman had overcome to finally have a stable life.

Since we left, God has continued to remind me of Herman. He has come so far, and with some new wheels could go even further. So we're raising funds for a new wheelchair--Herman's Workshop Wheels--to make his daily paths smoother, whether its in the shop, a ramp, or wherever life takes him.
