Breaking the Cycle of Harm and Poverty
Having been married off at age 7, Mary became locked in a grim reality of premature motherhood and slavery. But her life took a different turn in 2024 after an entrepreneurship training by Her Voice Foundation. The once-dejected teenager is today a proud business owner, saving for her university education with income from her hair salon.
Unlike Mary, Fidelia and Rebecca were disowned by their families after they each became pregnant at 13.
A wide-spanning crisis
But Mary is hardly alone. According to UNICEF, 1 in 10 teenage girls in sub-Saharan Africa becomes a mother before 18, joining 12 million girls globally that are married before the age of 18. For the girls, the result of these early pregnancies is a grievous end to their education and a steady decline into a life of poverty and undue submission.
But teenage girls don't deserve this injustice.
Pregnant and abandoned by her family. Fidelia and Rebecca, both 13, found themselves pregnant and rejected by their families. Blessing, pregnant at 15, faced the same hardship. These girls, survivors of harmful cultural practices and early pregnancies, represent just a few of the over 2,000 girls Her Voice Foundation caters for.
