Her Silk Veil - Film

Hello, my name is Sophie Kotyk, the director, and writer of 'Her Silk Veil'. I am here to gather some funds in order to create my Final Project at university.

This is a project I am deeply looking forward to and excited to get made as it is in tandem with a research project aiming to answer the question: 'to what degree can symbolism drive a narrative?'

Logline

Caught in a web of her own fabrication, Mestra, a skilled pathological liar, juggles multiple affairs until she unexpectedly falls for someone who questions the mascarade. But as her feelings deepen, she's forced to confront the tangled web of deceit she's woven, risking everything for a shot at genuine love amidst the ruins of her intricate facade.

The Project

The cover image depicts the Greek myth of 'Erysichthon Selling His Daughter Mestra.' In this myth, her father cuts down trees in a grove, sacred to Demeter. Demeter therefore punishes him by placing Aethon, the god of famine, in his stomach, making him permanently hungry. He sells all his possessions, including his daughter, Mestra, to buy food but is still hungry. Mestra was freed from slavery by Poseidon, her lover, who gave her the gift of shape-shifting to escape her bonds. Eventually, Erysichthon ate himself in hunger.

This myth has provided 'Her Silk Veil' with loose inspiration but ultimately, this story has come from introspection. I don't ever want my art not to express at least a fragment of myself. So, I usually begin my creative process by asking myself difficult questions that I may struggle to find the answers to. The same was the case for this project. I wondered why I and many others feel the need to curate ourselves, from our interests to our desires, to be more appealing to the people around us.

Artistically, I want to experiment with the usage of symbolism, motifs, and set design.
