On Tuesday, September 6th, 1 ½ year-old Julianna Marks went to a well-child appointment that her parents expected to go smoothly and quickly. When the Doctor came into the room, he noticed Julianna was very pale and immediately insisted on running lab work. Upon receiving the results, the Doctor called and instructed Jeff and Nicole, Juliannas’ parents, to get her to Eastern Maine as soon as possible as her platelet, white and red blood cell counts were dangerously low.

Julianna was admitted to the Eastern Maine pediatric ICU, and after several hours of trying to place an IV catheter, they started blood and platelet transfusions. They continued to run more tests into Wednesday, and they were able to confirm a diagnosis of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.

On Friday, the 9th, Julianna underwent a bone marrow biopsy and lumber puncture to gather more information to determine their course of treatment. Julianna’s medical team wasted no time starting her on chemotherapy. She has since had three treatments and has needed additional transfusions.

This beautiful little girl was supposed to be discharged today, the 16th. Unfortunately, the first few treatments haven't been able to put her into remission, so she continues to stay at Eastern Maine. Today, she started additional methods of treatment and medications.

While Julianna has been at Eastern Maine, her terrified and tired parents have been faithfully by her side. Nicole is on a very fixed income, and Jeff has been out of work to be there for them. We are hoping to gather enough funds to cover travel, food, lodging and medical expenses that aren’t otherwise covered by their insurance. We hope that in doing so, we can make it so Nicole and Jeff’s only job is to focus on tending to their smart, sweet, book and Cocomelon-loving little girl.
