Bato Catanduanes Storm Damage
An extremely powerful Category 5–equivalent super typhoon, internationally named Typhoon Goni, known locally in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Rolly made its very first landfall in the town of Bato in an island Province of Catanduanes at 4:30 A.M, Sunday November 1, 2020. It was a direct hit by the ferocious eye of the super typhoon in the Bicol Region.
With a sustained wind speed of 225 km/h and wind gust of 315 km/h, it became the strongest tropical cyclone observed worldwide thus far in year 2020. This catastrophic winds caused widespread devastation to infrastructures, significant flooding and destruction of agriculture mainly rice and abaca farmlands, massive power and communication outages, food and water supply disruption and 80% to 90% damages to buildings, and homes with light materials levelled to the ground. Most roads connecting other towns have become impassable due to landslides and fallen trees or electric posts. In other villages some people have lost their lives, including a five-year-old child, due to drowning and falling debris.
27 barangays or barrios of the Municipality of Bato are near devastation. With COVID-19 pandemic and lost produce of high-value crops and staple food, the most vulnerable displaced populations have become even more vulnerable.
It is for this reason that we come to you for assistance - to establish a relief fund that can support the immediate needs like food, water, medicine, shelter, financial assistance and help the severely affected families bring back their livelihood.
Thank you.
