Greetings Everyone,
It comes with great dispair that I start this campaign. I went to sleep 1/26/15 knowing a blizzard was on its way the next day. What I did not expect was the call that would change my life. On 1/27/15 around 4:00am, my mothers apartment in Nutley, NJ caught on fire. They believe the fire started on the second floor right underneath their bedroom on the third floor. Both my mother and her boyfriend are chronically disabled and had to go through the second floor to escape (my mother is in a wheelchair so she barely made it out alive, she had to drag herself down 4 flights of stairs and out of her home.) It breaks my heart she didnt even get to put shoes on her feet before she was displaced into the snowstorm. They were immediately hospitalized and although the cause of the fire is unknown, it remains under investigation. The Red Cross has been gracious enough to get them a hotel for a few days and a few clothing items but beyond that, they have nothing. They didnt have much but they lost the few things they did have. All of our family heirlooms, jewelry, photos, medical needs, collectors items, and their 3 cats did not make it out. Needless to say, they are devistated, and now homeless. They did not have insurance on any of their belongings either. Right now I am hoping to find a new residence for them which they can afford, but financially they have nothing. With this fundraiser, I am hoping to raise at least some money for them to put towards a security deposit once we can find them a new home. All money raised will go towards housing, furniture, clothing, food, medical needs, phones (they currently have no form of communication), etc. Any and all help will be appreciated.
Update: Some jewelry and Jan's favorite cat Inkspot were recovered. Inkspot appears to have suffered some injuries however and will need to find veterinary services.
The photo above was the aftermath before the building was boarded up. As you can see the windows were blown out and there are holes through the roof. We are honestly lucky everyone made it out alive.
