I am organizing a fundraising in partnership with the Encinitas Lions Club to help the victims of Peru’s natural disaster and we really need your help.
I was born in Trujillo, Peru where most of my family lives. Although for the most part my family is safe; many others aren’t. I had to fly my mom to San Diego because it's just not safe to be in Peru.
Please Help! by donating and/or sending this to friends! I have also posted on Facebook. If you could please share the link in your timeline, would be very helpful. Any amount, even a couple of dollars count and can help many people.
River overflows, landslides and flooding caused by heavy rainfall throughout Peru have so far resulted in 101,104 victims. Onslaughts of nature have led to the collapse of 11,519 houses, damaging 141,149 others & leaving thousands homeless.
Many key highways have been destroyed and bridges collapsed, leaving people trapped.
The slides have caused sewer systems to overflow, flooding the streets with sewage.
The rains haven’t stopped yet and they are forecast to continue for several weeks. After the rain finally stops though; with all that water floating around, a mosquito infestation is expected, which may trigger a dengue fever outbreak.
The problem is that with Peru being a third world country, there are tons of extremely poor people and they are the ones that have been mostly affected. If they lived in small sheds before; now they don’t even have that. Drinking water is very scarce, and food is scares and therefore being sold very expensive at the markets. These people are hungry and desperate now and they are breaking into businesses and houses to steal whatever they can find.
A cemetery in my city was washed away and there were skeletons flowing in the muddy rivers of water that cover downtown Trujillo streets. These are facts. I didn’t see it on the news; I called different family members and they informed me of the situation as they were living it. They are tons of orphan homeless kids that are now walking on those muddy sewage infected streets with no shoes and they are being subjected to all sorts of infectious diseases.
I am going to stop here. I think you got the picture.
Please help. You can help by donating any amount. ANY AMOUNT will be of help as it can buy clean water for someone thirsty. In addition to your donations; please send your prayers to the people in Peru; your prayers are very much needed.
My mom has been an active member of the Lions Club in Trujillo, Peru for over 30 years, so I grew up seeing this organization working hard to help the ones in need. I have spoken to a Trujillo Womens' Lions Club branch (Club de Leones Amistad y Servicio) and all the money we collect will be sent to them with the help of the Encinitas Lions Club.
The Trujillo-Peru Lions Club "Amistad & Servicio" is organized and waiting for the money to arrive to be used in 2 specific campaigns:
a) A water campaign: to provide clean/drinkable water to areas where there is none due to the disaster.
b) A Kid's campaing: to provide medical assistance to homeless kids that are suffering from skin disease due to their contact with the infected sewer water that is covering the streets.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration,
God bless you for your help,
Marcela Alva
