My father, Tatay Danny (Timoteo Abayhon Avellana), is a loving husband, father, grandfather, and the pillar of our family. At 64 years old, he has always been the kind of person who puts everyone else first. He spent his life working hard to provide for our family, teaching us the values of perseverance, faith, humility, and unconditional love.
In 2022, doctors first detected a tumor in his liver. We held on to hope and did everything we could to monitor his condition. Despite the diagnosis, Tatay Danny remained strong and continued living life with courage and optimism.
Over the years, however, the tumor continued to grow. Recently, after multiple tests, scans, and consultations, we received the devastating news that his illness had progressed to Stage IV liver cancer.
One of the most difficult complications he is facing is the continuous buildup of fluid in his abdomen, known as ascites. During his recent hospitalization, doctors drained approximately 2.5 liters of fluid from his abdomen to relieve the pressure and help him breathe more comfortably.
Unfortunately, this is not a one-time procedure. The fluid keeps returning, and even simple daily activities such as drinking water can contribute to the discomfort. As the fluid accumulates, Tatay Danny experiences abdominal swelling, weakness, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing. Because of this, he may need to undergo fluid drainage (paracentesis) once or even twice every other week, depending on how quickly the fluid returns and how severe his symptoms become.
Despite these challenges, Tatay Danny continues to fight every day.
His oncology team has recommended immunotherapy, a treatment that helps the body’s immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. While immunotherapy offers hope of slowing the progression of the disease and extending his life, it comes at a very high cost.
The treatment plan currently requires one immunotherapy session every month. Depending on the medication prescribed and his response to treatment, the cost can range from approximately ₱80,000 to ₱250,000 or more per session, not including:
* Laboratory tests
* CT scans and imaging studies
* Doctor consultations
* Hospital admissions
* Medications and supportive treatments
* Fluid drainage procedures
Our family has already exhausted a significant portion of our savings trying to keep up with the medical expenses.
Recent Hospitalization Expenses
During Tatay Danny’s most recent admission, the hospital charges reached ₱172,558.55. Through Senior Citizen discounts, PhilHealth benefits, and payments already made by our family, we were able to reduce part of the bill.
Amount already paid: ₱80,200.00
Senior Citizen Discount: ₱27,331.14
PhilHealth Benefits: ₱23,010.00
Even after these deductions, there remained a hospital balance of ₱42,017.41, plus ₱29,000.00 in professional fees, bringing the remaining obligation to approximately ₱71,017.41 for this admission alone.
These expenses are only the beginning of a long journey that includes ongoing cancer treatment, future hospital visits, laboratory monitoring, and repeated fluid drainage procedures.
As difficult as this journey has been, Tatay Danny continues to show remarkable strength. He still asks about his children and grandchildren. He still smiles when family visits. He still believes that every new day is a blessing.
Today, we are humbly asking for your support.
