Ulee's 2.5 Months Studying in Rome

Donation protected
10 weeks and the unforgetable experience of a lifetime!

My name is Ulises Acosta and I'm a 21 year old attending Loyola University Chicago (LUC). I was originally raised in Waukegan, IL and have had the ultimate blessing of studying Theatre at such a great insitution for the past three years. I have been in love with the stage ever since I was young enough to read lines on a script. My hope is to one day open an acting school (or teach at a university) where I can help individuals in all walks of life at becoming the performer they aspire to be.

As I am nearing the end of my college career, I can't help but feel that there is something missing from my college experience. After months of reflecting on what there still is to gain, I recalled a memory I didn't know I still had. As a freshman in high school, I sat in class and listened to my teacher speak about her experience studying abroad and how it shaped the person she became. She too was a theatre major and this inspired me to follow in her footsteps. Today, I ask you kind hearted people to help me in achieving my goal of studying abroad for ten weeks at the John Felice Rome Center (JFRC).

I have already been accepted but the issue is that most scholarships (mine included) do not transfer over to the JFRC summer programs. If given the blessing of reaching my goal, I would use this money soley for airline tickets, textbooks, and housing expenses. I have three weeks to submit my deposit, at which point my seat will be given to another student who can afford the experience. I'm afraid that if I don't show that I can afford this program, they will give my seat up and I will lose this opportunity forever.

Growing up in a low to middle class suburb, I was fully aware of the financial struggle plaguing my family. As the child of a Honduran immigrant father and a Puerto Rican mother, I have always been fascinated by life in other places outside of the United States. Thankfully, I did have the opportunity to visit my dismayed country of Honduras and it was an experience that changed my view on life entirely.

The idea that we must not only learn and appreciate but more importantly experience the cultures of other countries and people has since then ingrained itself in my brain. I believe it to be a value one must attain at some point in their life. I'm positive that Loyola has thoroughly and efficiently prepared me for the moment in which studying abroad would not only be a “fun time”, but another life changing event that shapes the person I become. It would also be the opportunity to visit one of the places where theatre originated from (but that's just an extra advantage).

If I reach my goal, I will owe all of my happiness to the kindness of you donors. You found it in your heart to read this message and meet a person who simply wants to make the world a better place by getting to understand what others go through. I want to take everything that I encounter abroad and write plays about what the real human experience is. I want there to be a possibilty of me falling in love with Rome to the point where I can consider moving there postgrad to continue studying or working in theatre. I aspire to radiate truth in everything I do, and through my craft I hope that I can inspire others to do the same.

Thank you for even taking the time to read this message!

Peace and blessings to all.
