Trav's Motorcycle Accident Help!
As most of you know by now, Travis was involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident a few weeks ago. With the help of some very skilled doctors and Trav's positive attitude, he is on his long road to recovery and we could use your help.
Trav was hit by a truck turning left in front of him at an intersection while he was going straight. The truck caused severe damages and internal bleeding in his pelvic area. He lost over 40% of his blood internally but thankfully the doctors were able to save his life. He also suffered brutal damages to his right side and pelvis. He fractured and broke his right elbow, lower arm, tailbone and knee. All these took 4 separate surgeries. Trav was forced to spend 6 days in just the ICU alone due to fear of sepsis and more internal bleeding. In addition, Trav has 3 pelvic fratures, in the front of his pelvis, which is keeping him from being able to bear any weight in his legs for awhile. He also suffered from a fracture in his ankle and a very deep laceration in his stomach which must be attached to a wound vac in order to heal him from the inside out. Also, considering how active Travis is, as well as his love of soccer, he will have to get multiple ligament surgeries in order to be able to participate in the sports he loves.
Unfortunately, since we just moved to the Los Angeles area, Trav has not lived here long enough to earn short term disability through his job or through the state of California. Therefore, we are now living off of just my (Heidi's) income. Which as a lot of you know that in California, it just isn't enough. I have also had to reduce my hours severely to help Trav with his recovery process for even simple tasks such as having to use the bathroom. Trav is definitely testing out his vows "In sickness and in health..."
Another issue we are about to run into is that the nursing facility, that Trav is doing his rehab at, is now telling us that we most likely only have 2 weeks before they kick us out. Their reasoning being that since Trav will most likely have plateaued in his recovery process by then and will have to wait until he is allowed to bear weight on his legs. So we are going to be sent home with no care and just me to try and move him around. Our only other option would be to hire 24 hour nursing care, which will be completely on us to pay and stupid Kaiser refuses to help us pay for it even though we pay them for insurance . (Makes a whole lot of sense huh?<Sarcasm noted.)
In addition to all this, it could be a very long process before we hear anything from the insurance companies. Also, there is the great possibility that the man that hit Trav with his truck could be greatly underinsured. Which would mean we would basically get nothing.
Any help you could provide, whether it be emotional or financial support, would be greatly appreciated. (I'm also open to any job opportunities - any help really to help pay the bills!)
- Travis and Heidi
Note from Travis:
So many of you have already reached out and shown an overabundance of love for us that I never expected. I appreciate it more than you can imagine, and as tough as I try to be, this accident has tested my toughness. I am always joking around and being positive, which helps with my recovery, but I truly want to just break down sometimes. Partly because I see how hard Heidi is working...on the phone trying to figure out financials, dealing with the crazy world of insurance, taking care of me when a nurse takes too long to come into the room, staying overnight in an uncomfortable chair and still going to work. She is a true blessing! I am worried that she is stressing herself out too much and I feel terrible. We are doing everything we can to put ourselves in the right place, but it seems we are getting the short end of the stick on SO many situations. We are not the people to ask for help, but in this situation, much like me going on a bedpan, we have to let go of our pride and take any help that can be offered. So many of you have already helped more than you can know, and it brings a tear to my eye thinking about it.
We love you guys, please pass our story around for any additional help! Also, if you would like to leave a comment or words of encouragement please privately message Travis. Thanks again!
