On September 20, 2015, Tom Jorza's life, and the life of his family, changed. Falling 18 feet onto concrete in Pullman, Washington left Tom with a severe brain injury that had his family terrified he might not survive.
Tom survived.
Today, after nearly 11 months of incredible persistence, coupled with intensive therapy from caregivers, his parents and friends, Tom is making real progress. He can move his limbs, communicate over a special computer, and is fully aware of his situation. But, he can't walk on his own - he needs help with every step.
Tom will walk again - on his own.
My name is John Cofano. As a family friend, and believer in the true potential of every person to achieve their dreams no matter the challenges, I wanted to help.
On Sunday, August 21, 2016, I'll attempt to complete Ironman Coeur d'Alene in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. This 140.6 mile test of human endurance is something I've done twice before - each time it's been harder than I could have imagined. But both times, I've finished.
Back in February, as I started my training, I challenged Tom to walk again - on his own - if I could finish Ironman Coeur d'Alene in his honor. With a "thumbs-up" he said "Yes!". As he's struggled to rehab, I've swam, biked and ran to get ready for this ultimate test of my fitness. It'll be extraordinarily difficult, but I'll have the knowledge that Tom is watching - using my race to continue his.
Because someday, not only will Tom walk, he will run again. Maybe, he'll become an Ironman too.
Now, I challenge you, friends of my family, the Jorza's and the many people who love Tom to come together and race with us on our Ironman journey - to help his family with the extraordinary medical and home care expenses it takes to recover from a severe brain injury. Every dollar raised will go to Tom's continuing care.
Tom will do this - he will walk again. Now, it's your turn to help him.
