“He has been laying there for 5 hours! We have called every agency, and nobody has come. So, thank you!” These are the words I hear from a caring woman worried about a dog. A dog whose soulless eyes tears you apart to the core of your heart and soul. His body is so thin that my hand fits around his waist, and he can’t move. This is the scene in front of an abandoned house with high weeds, worried neighbors and a motionless dog – an Akita – I christened “Titanic.” It doesn’t look good.
After wrapping him in a white blanket, I lifted him up. We immediately realized the jaunt to the jeep was going to be a bit difficult. His legs were dangling, like dead weight. Most dogs tense up when I carry them which makes it easier, but instead Titanic was limp. I think he is paralyzed.
Driving back to Stray Rescue, I had one hand on the wheel and the other hand petting Titanic. I wanted him to know from this moment on, you are no longer a stray. You are no longer unwanted. You are now truly loved. Soon, I knew he would be loved by many. Pulling up to the shelter, the Stray Rescue trauma team was ready with a gurney. It was time for the vet team to try and save his life.
Titanic bonded with me even though he was in pain and was very lethargic. His eyes followed me wherever I walked. I gave him a kiss and whispered encouraging words. The decision was made that he needed the care of a neurologist, so now our boy is at VSS – a specialty hospital with one of the best neurologists in the Midwest.
Medically, and we what we know so far is he has fractures in the ischial bone, ilium bone and the sacrum near the spine (the toughie). Then there is the dehydration and emaciation. Many surgeries await our boy.
I know I always ask for donations at the end of the story, but when I got the news he needs an MRI and the doctors wanted my approval for this $5,000 cost alone, I didn’t hesitate with a “yes.” I thought to myself that I’ll start a Go Fund Me page with hopes that the social media community will rally to save Titanic. He is going to be expensive, but when I looked into his hurting eyes and saw a young dog wanting to finally know love, food and health, I can’t just look away. He deserves health, love and comfort since humanity failed him so miserably. This is what we do at Stray Rescue. We leave no stone unturned to save the lives that others deemed discarded and unworthy. I need your help. Please donate. Time to save Titanic.
